We are riveted on prayer. As we journey through Ephesians on Sunday mornings we come to Paul's prayer for those who would be reading his letter. Often times we relegate prayer to the physical need of the moment whether it's ours, a friends, an acquaintance or someone whose story particularly moves us. We should pray about physical ailments. James tells us to do so. We shouldn't confine our prayers only to those things.
Prayer begins with the acknowledgment of Christ's supremacy. We do not offer up prayers to just anyone. We offer up prayers to the One, the Way, the Truth and the Life. Only He is able to answer. He alone has the authority and ability to respond to our prayers.
These prayers continue with the understanding that there are greater issues than the physical. Paul lifts his readers up to God asking that they might "see" three things. First, that they might know the hope to which they have been called. Second, that they might know the riches of His glorious inheritance. Third, that they might know the greatness of God's power to those who believe. Paul was concerned about their physical well-being. But he was less concerned about that than about their growing in wisdom and knowledge of God. It is this that allows us to be profitable whatever our circumstances.
Pray for physical needs. Pray for spiritual needs as well.
